Several Burlington students have been recognized in the 2023 Scholastic Art Awards.
Edward Stone eighth-grader Penelope Osbourne received a Gold Key for her oil pastel art piece and is moving on to the Regional and National part of the art competition that will be announced March 22.
BHS senior Ayla Cannon received Honorable Mention for her six-art piece portfolio, along with Honorable Mention for a Digital Art Piece with Color Pencils and an Honorable Mention for watercolor painting.
BHS junior Ashi Pennaka received Honorable Mention for a Digital Design art piece.
BHS sophomore Norah Bell received a Silver Key for a Digital Art piece. She was one place away from receiving an opportunity to earn a scholarship.
“Scholastic is a great tent pole on what the Burlington K-12 Art students can accomplish,” BHS art teacher Tony Onesto said. “With more than 10,000 pieces received in Iowa, it is the hardest juried competition that we enter. We as a district and through continued support can compete with any district public or private in the state of Iowa.”
Here is an excerpt from an award letter:
“Since 1923, the Awards have recognized some of America’s most celebrated artists and writers while they were teenagers, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Amanda Gorman, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol. We are proud to count you among these esteemed Scholastic Awards alumni!”
